BEST PLACE TO EAT ON THE ISLAND! This place is absolutely awesome!! The staff are wonderful and friendly. The menu is relaxed and everything is delicious. Fried green tomatoes were perfection. Otherwise we kept it basic with burgers. Fries were crispy and delicious. Burgers were thick and tasty! Outdoor dining area has tables under a beautiful tree with hanging Spanish moss- so beautiful and the shade is great. Full and happy! Thank you!
Delish! Daufuskie doesn't have many restaurants but luckily Lucy Bell's is a great option! Get there as soon as they open for lunch, because they fill up fast, and you'll waste your sun time waiting for a table, or for the kitchen to catch up, if you straggle. I love lima beans, and Lucy Bell's limas were sooo good! Got an extra serving for dessert! The fried chicken was okay, not the best I've had, but it did the job. Unfortunately, my toddler wasn't super drawn in by anything except mac n cheese, AND he did gobble up the key lime pie. I am sure if you're a frequent visitor, and know the menu better, you know exactly what their best options are, and those are all probably 5 stars. For me, I got what I usually get when I order Southern, and it was mainly the limas that stood out for me, though the mac n cheese was very well made (my toddler ate all of mine), and I was not particularly appetized by the gravy on rice side, but boy was I surprised when I tasted it. I was expecting a really gross canned gravy taste from the look of it, but that was good gravy! I don't see a lot of gravy-smothered rice on menus up north, but it worked. It was actually a smarter option in the heat than mashed potatoes, because it wasn't as dense. But the BFD by far were the 10-star limas, I'll tell you what. You kind of show up, they're inside cooking, you line up to go make an order, they bring it out to you, and you clean up after yourself. This is a good island-relaxed system, and works even better during COVID times. Not sure how they handle rain? I guess that's golf cart takeout only. The tables almost all have umbrellas, but in a driving rain, that doesn't do anything. Anyway, dogs are allowed on leash, and everyone is pretty chill and friendly. We had a local next to us who gave me some tips on the beach. It's affordable, good food. I recommend the limas, and asking the kitchen or a local what is best!
Knocking off one star because we asked for celery sticks and a teenager came to our table twice to deliver celery sticks but he was literally just holding them in his hands with no gloves on and his hand looked dirty! We are not over the top crazy clean freaks so we didn't make an issue out of it, but cmon now , we are in the middle of a pandemic so the irony was real . It was kind of funny because I know My facial expression looked shocked and the kid looked like this was normal protocol. As of APRIL 2021, here's what to know : There are no public restrooms. They close at 3pm so if you arrive after 2pm they may be sold out of some things. They do not serve alcohol. There is no indoor dining . Tables are located outside in the yard . Pro Tip: There are also two tables on the back deck . We sat at one of the two tables because it offered more privacy , a table off the dirt and shade umbrellas. If you sit here you're also close to the kitchen should you need anything . Bug spray recommended . The food: Our food was very good . We had the peel and eat shrimp , the pimento cheese (this is what we requested celery for because I eat low carb) and the sesame seared tuna Niçoise salad . I told one of the owners (who took our order) that I ate low carb and to please leave off the potatoes and add anything that was low carb and he went above and beyond . Their modified salad included strawberries, carrots, cucumbers, cranberries and several other toppings that combined for a delicious salad - really appreciated the great customer service. We enjoyed our food , service and the low key , casual ambiance . We would definitely dine here again !
Operating under the conditions imposed by Covid-19 is a challenge. Operating out of a kitchen the size of a minivan under those conditions is almost impossible. And yet they do it so well that you would never know anything was wrong at all. The special when I was visiting the island was grouper and grits. The grouper was cooked perfectly, tender and juicy with a light char and a gentle Cajun spice. The grits were thick with just the right amount of drippings from the grouper fillet snaking out into them. And collard greens were cooked just right, still a little firm but with a great texture and flavor. And the view. You get to enjoy a meal prepared with the skill and wisdom of generations of southern cuisine in the shade of a large swooping live oak draped in spanish moss. This was a meal I will likely not forget.
Loved everything about Lucy's. They have good food and an efficient in and order /exit. Loved sitting out under the ginormous live oak tree to enjoy lunches. The only negative are the random dogs that come into the area and beg and annoy you or if you brought your on dog on a leash ( as we did), come and and make them ( and us ) nervous. Though this wasn't anything to do with Lucy's it did alter our bringing our dogs for subsequent visits.
